About
“Light is all. When light is right, form is right. Light is everything, light is vibration like, music. Everything is vibration.”
- Adapted from Marc Chagall
When I was eight or nine years old, there were two books I was compelled to view over and over. One was a photographic history of World War II; the other was a collection of portraits by the renowned Yousuf Karsh. Both books sat in a bookshelf in the living room of my next door neighbor, and I spent many a solitary afternoon turning the pages of both volumes: one filled with the movement, pageantry, chaos and horror of combat; the other with beautifully crafted still portraits of people I had no idea were famous but whom, through the deeply rich black and white images, I could sense were important. Looking at these books was hypnotic and imprinted on me a template for the kind of photographs I strive to create: simple but arresting images that convey a unique perspective; images that invite the viewer to feel, think and wonder - about themselves and the world around them. I look for surprising beauty and mystery in ordinary objects and moments.
Although my love of photography reaches back many years, my photographic expression is relatively recent. My day job as a mental health therapist and my life job as a mother of three took most of my time and all of my energy for the last forty years. Having joined the ranks of the joyfully retired I am now free to devote myself to this long lost love. As I explore shapes, shadows, light and form I am drawn by images that “vibrate” their music to me.
